We must admit, big cities are usually not our favourite travel destinations. However, with Lisbon it was different. We just can’t seem to put our finger on exactly why, but we could have stayed in this city for a few more days. Hum …could it be the sardines (which were simply yummy) or the fact that we saw many people eating soup for breakfast. 😊 By the way, sardines in Portugal are different from what you would get back in Canada. Here they are thicker and more succulent.🐟

Chillin’ in Lisbon – we’re arrived!
So excited, hard to believe we’re finally here! We started out by spending an amazing day yesterday with our Italian friends in Toronto. So grateful for this wonderful friendship!
Our flight went smoothly. Before leaving Toronto we were a bit worried as we flew from Toronto to Lisbon with TAP Air Portugal and we had heard a few bad reviews about this airline. We were on time and there were no hiccups whatsoever. We had a meal when we boarded the plane and again they offered a small bite in the morning with great coffee. TAP often offers discount fares but of course, you need to pay extra for your seats and checked baggage if you have any. This was our first experience with them but we would probably fly with them again. Nothing fancy but comfortable and got us to our destination on time.
On arrival to Lisbon, we took the metro to the city. Since it was Sunday we figured it would not be as busy. We had no problem with our luggage. However, beware lots of stairs so we you can’t lift your luggage best not to take the metro. Lisbon metro guide.
It’s a lovely 14 degrees celsius here today in Lisbon and that feels just perfect!
We are satisfied with our Airbnb. It’s a small apartment with a “bohemian- like decor”. It’s very clean and our superhost had an arrival treat waiting for us, which included wines, bread, local cheese and a fruit basket😊🍷. SO so nice after a long trip! He also gave us lot’s of info and plenty of recommendations on places for us to see and do during our stay in the city. We will give a more thorough review of this airbnb at the end of the week but so far so good!
We can’t wait to get going tomorrow morning and explore this city!
boa noite!
Les préparatifs- flying out soon.
Well, we are only hours away from our 5-month European trip. We have a bit of mixed emotions, we’re feeling excited, “énerver”, worried & sad. I wish everyone we care about could come along with us on this adventure. What a blast that would be!
One item that managed to get into our carry-on luggage…notre p’tite nappe champêtre. It’s peeking out from the back of the suitcase. It would never miss a trip! It’s been tucked away since our last trip to Burgundy-Alsace in the Fall of 2017. Nice to see it back out and into a suitcase.
So here goes, this is the itinerary (see list below ) we ended up with. We’ve done quite a bit of reading up on these different countries and now we’re so excited to discover them!
- Lisbon, Portugal
- Porto, Portugal
- Kotor, Montenegro
- Dubrovnik, Croatia
- Zagreb, Croatia
- Budapest, Hungary
- Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Split, Croatia
- Istria, Croatia
- Venice, Italy
- Ljubljana & Lake Bled, Slovenia
- Lucerne, Switzerland

Stay tune! Lisbon next stop!
European destinations for 2019
Well here we are December 1st and the holiday season festivities are underway. We are also just weeks away from leaving for our travel adventure in Europe. First destination, Lisbon, Portugal.
It’s only been a few months since we stopped working and doing this extended European trip will be the no.1 item on our “retirement bucket list”. I had read once (which has always stuck with me) “when you stop moving, your dead”. Travelling will hopefully keep us on the move! 😊
When we first thought of booking this trip we said to each other, let’s not overthink this, let’s just do it! Often dreams are abandoned as quickly as they are thought up. Something will come up and plans will be put off to another day as you wait for “that perfect moment”. So… having said that, last March 2018, we saw a really fabulous deal on a flight to Lisbon in the new year 2019 and we just said, “let’s book it!”
This will be the first time that we will be away for several months, as usually we only had a few weeks of vacation to plan for. I must admit I do get the jitters a few weeks before I leave. However, I know that as soon as I get on that flight the jitters will all go away. As well, having access to FaceTime is going to make it easier as we can stay connected with our family & friends. I wish they could all come with us.
The biggest challenge for this trip was deciding where to go. Having been to Europe before we decided to focus on the countries we have not yet been too. As well since we’re leaving in January we somewhat considered the winter temperatures at the places we would visit.
So here goes, this is the itinerary (see list below ) we ended up with. We’ve done quite a bit of reading up on these different countries and now we’re so excited to discover them!
